How Fast Can an Electric Car Actually Be?

What do you think of when you hear the words electric car? For some of us the vision is of a Nissan Leaf and the puttering along it can do. While this car is one of the most popular examples of an electric car it’s not exactly an exciting model unless you only consider saving the environment exciting. Even though the Leaf is an admirable vehicle for many to drive there has to be something more enjoyable on the stage than the Leaf to turn our heads and give us the excitement we want to have from behind the wheel of an electric car.

With the new BMW i-series models the i3 and i8 are great examples of hybrid cars that can give you more excitement than the Leaf, but neither is an all-electric car. There is the upcoming Chevrolet Bolt which will be an EV model and give you a car that offers a style that’s more familiar than what the Leaf offers and the Volt which has been on the market for some time, but also isn’t an all EV model. The Bolt will be an EV from the start, but it’s not even on the market yet and won’t be until 2017, but this is certainly a step in the right direction.

If we look to Tesla the prestige and power of the Model S P90D certainly makes a huge argument for the EV models of today. Here’s a car that has never had a gasoline engine or considered needing one and it offers you impressive power and speed right from the start to be one of the most admired EV models on the road today. With the Tesla P90D we’re certainly getting much closer to what we want to drive, but aren’t quite there yet.

What we really want when we say something exciting is a supercar that offers the speed, power and looks of an impressive hypercar for us to make crazy noises at as if we were watching a fireworks show. The Rimac Concept One is such a car and it will certainly give you the feeling of a car that was made for only a few wealth buyers to own, but also offers the impressive power of four electric motors under the skin to give this car the numbers you want to have in a car that’s powered by only electricity.

The Rimac Concept One showed up in its production form at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. This car may as well have been the concept model since Rimac will only make eight of them and it came in with the four electric motors, one on each wheel, to produce 1,088 horsepower and 1,180 lb.-ft. of torque. This is a car that can action reach sixty mph in less than 2.6 seconds and give you the exciting drive you want to enjoy, but that’s not telling the entire story of what this Rimac product offers.

As you can see in this video, when the Rimac Concept One is put up against the Tesla P90D with Ludicrous Mode the off the line race is extremely close with both cars being all electric and able to use their impressive torque immediately, but the Concept One takes the race quickly and beats the Tesla easily. With that race in hand the next challenger had to be something that would give the Concept One more of a race for the full quarter mile run which is why the Ferrari LaFerrari was chosen for as the second challenger.

It may come as some surprise to a few, but should come as no real surprise that the Rimac Concept One easily beat the LaFerrari twice during the video. This new electric hypercar is exceptionally gorgeous to look at and is full of awesome power to be one of the most impressive cars to ever be built. This may be the future of racing and dialed down versions could be the future of EV driving around the world, but for now you can enjoy the video and witness the amazing drive of the Rimac Concept One as it destroys two highly powerful and fast cars.
