Finding Ways to Branch Out
If an automaker has built their hybrid systems or their EV batteries to be fully integrated and only have a single application, they are being extremely narrow-minded and not considering what the batteries they have could mean. On the other hand, some companies are looking at how the batteries they create can be used for more applications than just in the vehicles they build and offer. We’ve heard about Tesla batteries being used to add power to a home in a renewable format and now know that another company has found a great way to use their batteries for more than just automotive use.
BMW Keeps It Simple
Nearly one hundred years ago, in the southern part of Germany that borders the Czech Republic, and Austria, Bavarian Motor Works was founded. Headquartered in Munich, inside the state of Bavaria, BMW started their company creating powerful engines and motorcycles. It didn’t take very long for them to break into the vehicle game with the production of their first car in the late twenties. Over the past eight and a half decades BMW has grown in popularity to become one of the world’s most popular luxury car designers, with no evidence of stopping or slowing down.

For the past forty years, the BMW 5 Series has been an admired luxury sedan on the road to give us something with a sporty edge in the midsized market. This sedan comes into the seventh generation this year to give you a larger size but lower weight with more power. The 5 Series also adds some of the impressive technology that’s been found in the 7 Series to give it more of a direct connection for you to enjoy the ride. The 5 Series is an impressive car to drive that can be enjoyed on the road as an active midsized luxury sedan.
2017 BMW X1: Barely an SUV, but Full of Vigor
The BMW X1 has been called many things, even by the company that makes it. This vehicle performs in the compact crossover SUV class as one of the most impressive small vehicles that sits up higher on the road, but it really doesn’t have any utility to speak of. Instead, BMW prefers to call this an SAV, which stands for Sport Activity Vehicle, giving the X1 the right name and title and showing that it doesn’t have to be a utility model to be an admirable vehicle to drive on the road.
2017 BMW X4: Creating a New Class of Vehicle
Leave it to BMW with all their many series of vehicles to create one that doesn’t fit anywhere. We have SUVs, but the X4 is not that, we have CUVs and it certainly isn’t that either. We even have SAVs with takes the utility out of the equation, but BMW is adamant the X4 is something else entirely. At BMW the X4 is called a Sport Activity Couple or SAC and it makes perfect sense. While the size of this vehicle is only slightly larger than a hatchback the style does invoke the feeling that it may just be a coupe that’s on a platform.
Special Cars that Make Driving Fun
Just thinking of these cars puts a smile on your face with the desire to find an open road or take them to the track. What these cars are called is special or homologations but what they really are is a group of race cars that are allowed to put license plates on them. When you have a car that can take off and lead the way on any race track to offer an amazing drive and impressive features in cars that are built to be a lot of fun to drive, admire and enjoy.
Enthusiastic Normal Cars
In a world where every car has a new class and it feels manufacturers are trying hard to have vehicles that can easily fit into a variety of categories I’m not sure what a normal car is anymore. If we define a normal car as one that looks like it should be made for driving on the commute to and from work then we still have a large variety, but for the most part we all know what a normal car is. What we don’t know is that some of these cars are made to be exciting to drive and are capable of turning even the stodgiest of us into an enthusiast with a huge smile on our faces.
What is Holding Back EV Sales
We talk about the EV’s becoming the future of the automotive world and we even see where some of the new models have reasonable driving range, but for 2015 the total sales of EV cars was less than one percent of the market. There are now 25 plug in models that you can choose from but most consumers are not ready to make the change from gasoline to electric propulsion for one simple reason; driving range. Most of these electric cars off driving ranges that wouldn’t even fill a full day of commuting, which then means we need to have either a backup gasoline engine for further driving or we need to have a way to charge the batteries quickly.
