“I have tried so many different hybrid systems from other brands, but none of them satisfied me,” Yamaguchi said. He pointed to the gap between accelerator input and the car’s actual response. When that delay creeps in, acceleration starts to feel uncomfortable, and for him that lag is the single biggest measure of whether a hybrid is any good. So rather than license someone else’s hardware, Mazda decided to engineer a setup it could tune to its own standards.
What the Skyactiv-Z Engine Brings
At the center of the new system sits an all-new 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine wearing the Skyactiv-Z badge. It replaces the Skyactiv-G and Skyactiv-X four-cylinders, and Mazda has promised even higher thermal efficiency along with a much wider operating range than those older units offered.
Yamaguchi is honest about the trade-offs. The gasoline engine still has some weakness in low-rpm power delivery, but that is exactly where the electric motor steps in. The motor fills the gaps the combustion engine leaves behind, which is how Mazda hopes to land on what Yamaguchi calls fun-to-drive performance without giving up the frugality customers want from a family SUV. Efficiency matters, but the team has been open that driving character came first, and that priority is part of why the launch slipped to 2027 rather than arriving sooner.
Built to Survive Tougher Emissions Rules
There is a regulatory reason this engine exists at all. The Skyactiv-Z is being developed to meet Euro 7 rules in Europe and the EPA’s Tier 4 standards in the United States, and those two markets get it first before it spreads elsewhere. Meeting stricter limits usually means losing power. Mazda has said that simply updating its current engines to pass the new rules would have cut output by as much as 30 percent, which is a steep penalty for any car that wants to feel quick.
The new engine is designed to dodge that compromise, holding onto its power while still clearing the tighter bar. For shoppers comparing hybrid cars across brands, that combination of cleaner output and preserved punch is the part worth watching, because plenty of efficient setups feel flat the moment you ask for a burst of speed.
Where This Technology Goes Next
The CX-5 may introduce the system, but it won’t be the only model to use it. Mazda plans to spread the next-generation engine and its in-house hybrid hardware across the lineup, which is good news for buyers eyeing smaller models down the road. The lessons from developing the Skyactiv-Z will also feed into the larger inline-six engines that power Mazda’s rear-wheel-drive-based SUVs, so the work being done here ripples well beyond a single crossover.
It’s fair to say Mazda is late to this party. The brand leaned hard into its own ideas while rivals racked up years of hybrid experience, and it has since pumped the brakes on electric cars to put its energy here instead. That late start is exactly why the company can’t afford a so-so result.
