Reviving a Classic: Fiat Unveils the 600e Electric Car

Soon, every car brand will have at least one all-electric vehicle offered. Fiat recently announced a new 600e all-electric small car for the European market.

Fiat faced difficulty finding a strong foothold in the United States. Although the Fiat 500, 124 Spider, and Abarth names ring with respect and legacy in Europe, the same isn’t true in America. Today, the only Fiat model sold in the United States is the tiny crossover SUV called the 500X. Although the brand doesn’t intend to bring the new 600e to the US, it will be a great alternative to the tiny 500e in Europe.

Why could this new Fiat be a success?

Some Americans don’t understand small spaces, tiny cars, and tight streets. We have wide open spaces, large roads, and cities that offer enough room for people to stretch out a little. The same isn’t true in most other developed countries. Many countries in Europe offer cities with small, tight streets, country roads that have only got room for one vehicle to travel at a time, and small villages that were never meant for large trucks and SUVs to drive through them. This makes small cars, like what Fiat offers, more attractive and useful around Europe.

The platform for the 600e already exists

Fiat is part of the Stellantis family, which also includes Jeep. Recently, a tiny Jeep electric crossover was created for the European market. The Jeep Avenger has the perfect platform for a slightly larger Fiat, which brings us to the 600e. This new all-electric Fiat offers the cutesy Italian design many admire with this brand while providing more space for a family of five to travel comfortably together. This new model could be a huge success in Europe, especially for consumers looking for something a little larger than the 500 lineup.

Is the 600 name part of Fiat history?

Just like the Fiat 500, the 600 name comes from the 1950s, when classic Fiat models became icons. This new and larger Fiat EV should include styling that makes it instantly recognizable as a descendant of the early models. This new 600e is 164.2 inches long, which makes it nearly 14 inches longer than the 500e. Although this new electric Fiat is a bit larger than the standard bearer, it’s still shorter than the 2023 Kia Rio, which is one of the smallest cars currently being sold in the United States.

This new Fiat isn’t fast, but its useful

The new Fiat 600e isn’t ready to challenge large SUVs and trucks for usefulness, but it does include 13 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seat, giving drivers room for groceries or everything needed for a day at the beach. Fiat equips this new model with the same 54.0-kWh battery found in the Jeep Avenger. This means the 600e has 249 miles of driving range using Europe’s WLTP test cycle. The batteries can be recharged to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes, making this car a good choice for some drives across the old continent.

In terms of speed, you won’t find much. The new 600e can hit 60 mph in just under 9.0 seconds, which makes it relatively slow, but that’s ok. Most people don’t drive Fiats for speed. This little car is powered by a single electric motor that sends 154 horsepower to the front wheels.

The 600e is easy to recognize

This new Fiat simply looks like a larger version of the original, which seems to be the desired design of the brand. You’ll find smooth surfaces, soft interior materials, and attractive oval LED headlights. The 18-inch wheels offer unique designs on higher trims, giving you a great set of wheels for the drive.

Instead of following the crowd, Fiat fitted the interior of the 600e with a 10.3-inch screen to handle the infotainment controls while leaving most of the dashboard functional and stylish for visual appeal. Modern electronics reside in this car which includes a 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster, a wireless device charger, and a few USB ports. There are eight different ambient light colors to choose from and a hands-free power liftgate at the rear to make this car a little more convenient for drivers.

Although we won’t see the new Fiat 600e in the United States, building a new and larger EV is a positive step for this lauded Italian brand. In addition to the all-electric model, Fiat intends to offer a hybrid powertrain in the middle of next year to expand the lineup.
