The new 2024 Acura Integra receives a shot of adrenaline to create the new Type S model. Will this high-powered Acura live up to the name?
Actually, the Type S is a relatively new name for Acura. The original models used the Type R moniker, but Honda already uses this name for the top-end Civic with an incredible powertrain and performance package. To keep things straightforward and understandable, Acura uses the Type S name to describe the fun and active car with the right amount of power for a lot of fun around the track.
How much power will this new Integra offer?
This new Type S version of the Integra brings power from the Honda Civic Type R. This is excellent news because the hot hatch Civic uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinde engine that makes 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. This new Acura sports sedan brings five more horsepower to give you a total of 320 for the driving fun desired. This amazing powertrain is an excellent start to us knowing that we have everything we want and need in this new high-powered Integra.
Forget the glory days of the hot Acura
The original Acura Integra sports sedans came in three flavors. Essentially we’re seeing a new Acura Integra without the base version. For 2023, the Integra A-Spec brings everything we love about the Honda Civic Si. For 2024, we’ll see things turned up a few notches to give this sprots sedan more power and the Type R powertrain. Is this new Acura Integra Type S packing enough heat to remind us of the glory days of this name? Its possible, but if you’re looking for NSX performance in this new Integra, you might be disappointed.
Still, the original Integra Type R that hit the Japanese domestic market in 1995 was like no other car in its class. Eventually, this hot car hit the United States, offering 195 horsepower along with the handling and performance that gave it significant improvements over the standard version of the car. This model also came with a stronger chassis, more power, and a better suspension.
The biggest changes in personality between the original Type R Integra model and the current Type S is the fact that the new Type S will ride on the existing Integra platform while the original didn’t share.
Is the Integra line simply rebadged Hondas?
Although it’s easy to fall in love with the Acura Integra A-Spec with its power derived from the Civic Si, this car begs the question of whether or not its simply a rebadged Honda. The new Acura Integra Type S does more to differentiate itself from its Honda cousin than the A-Spec model. That said, Acura could have done a lot more to bring a lot more style and differentiation to the Integra lineup to give this car something that bring back design qualities and charm found in the original model.
We’ve seen this new Acura out in prototype garb
The Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona is where we first saw the new Integra Type S. This race showed us this new car in its prototype camouflage rather than without the black and white coverings. The official debut of this new Acura performance car will take place at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach in April. This is where we’ll get a great look at what this new car brings to the market to give us the drive and fun we want to experience.
Should we compare this car to the original?
In all fairness, it doesn’t make sense to compare the new Acura Integra Type S to the original Type R model. This new model gives us the performance desired, but with Honda variants that preceded the Acura versions. That wasn’t the story for the original Integra. Instead of comparing and expecting this new Integra to live up to the Type R model of the 1990’s let’s apricate the new Type S for what it is; an excellent new luxury sports sedan that can be a whole lot of fun to drive.
